4. White Tiger at Singapore Zoo dies
The white tiger, named Winnie, was euthanised after months of suffering from a tumour in the jaw bone, according to Wildlife Reserves Singapore.
SINGAPORE: One of the white tigers at the Singapore Zoo was put down earlier this month.
Wildlife Reserves Singapore (WRS) said that the tiger, Winnie, was terminally-ill with a tumour in her jaw bone and euthanised on Aug 12. Her keepers and the veterinary team had been providing supportive care to her for the past few months to ensure her quality of life was maintained despite the tumour, WRS said.
"Recent reassessment has seen worsening of the tumour and the decision was made to euthanise her to prevent deterioration of her quality of life," it said. "Wildlife Reserves Singapore is saddened by the passing of our beloved white tiger Winnie."
Winnie was born in captivity in Taman Safari, Indonesia, and lived to 14 years, 10 months and 16 days. In the wild, tigers have an average lifespan of between 10 to 15 years, while those in captivity live for 16 to 20 years on average.
She arrived at Singapore Zoo on Apr 6, 2001, from Taman Safari, when she was 19 months old. Winnie is survived by her brother Omar, who is the sole white tiger at the zoo, WRS said.
